The NDP leader and the leader of the B.C. Liberals are sharing a “very strong and proud” sentiment that “we are better than this.”
Jagmeet Singh, NDP leader, and Jagmeet Bains, Liberal leader, speak to the media following the start of a news conference on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Wednesday, March 10, 2018.
The NDP is holding its first leadership convention since taking power in 2019.
(Sean Kilpatrick/Canadian Press)”I think the country is better than that, and I think the Canadians know it,” Singh told reporters at the launch of the new Leadership Conference.
“And we will continue to fight to make sure we are better.”
The NDP will hold its first leader convention in Ottawa this week, and Singh, who has led the party for years, said the party has a lot to be proud of in the first year of its new mandate.
“I’m looking forward to continuing that work, and having a great conference,” Singh said.
“This is a new beginning, but I know that the new mandate has been a tremendous catalyst for this growth.”
The New Democrats were first elected in the 2019 election and have held the province’s legislature since then.
The party has also won seats in provincial legislatures in two other provinces, with the most recent one in the Atlantic provinces.
Singh, who is also the federal finance minister, is widely expected to run for the party’s leadership again in 2020.
