A recent poll by the US-based Pew Research Centre suggests that billionaire Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, and his wife Melinda have more money than the next six richest people on the planet combined.
In the poll, which was conducted by the Pew Research Center on February 24 and 25, Gates was ranked the ninth richest person on the globe by a combined $4.2 trillion (AUD$4.9 trillion) valuation.
The survey also found that Melinda Gates is the fourth richest woman on the face of the planet with a net worth of $5.1 trillion.
Melinda Gates has been on a tear over the past year, buying up hundreds of millions of dollars worth of stock in companies including Walmart, Apple and Microsoft, which she now controls.
However, Bill Gates is no stranger to philanthropy.
The billionaire philanthropist has donated millions of dollar to organisations that he deems worthy of his support, including the Salvation Army and the UN.
He also has made a fortune through the sale of Microsoft stock.
A new report from the Pew survey also showed that the world has one of the richest and most diverse economies in the world, with the United States ranking sixth, followed by India, Germany, France and Britain.
The survey also highlighted that the richest one percent of people own an average of $2.8 trillion (AU$3.3 trillion) worth of assets and that the wealthiest one percent own about one third of the global wealth.
Among the richest people, the United Kingdom has the largest net worth, at $1.4 trillion (HK$1.9 billion).
The US is second with a wealth of $1 trillion (US$1 billion), followed by China at $890 billion (HK£1.1 billion).
